Amazon has announced a series of FBA fee increases that will impact sellers beginning January 2022. In a Seller Central news post dated November 16, the ecommerce giant stated: As you’ve seen widely reported in the press and have likely experienced yourselves, costs are rising and we now need to make adjustments to next year’s fee structure in response. In 2022, we will adjust FBA fulfillment fees to partially offset the higher permanent operating costs we face going forward. These adjustments will include the following:

  • FBA Fulfillment Fee Changes
  • FBA Monthly Storage Fee and Aged Inventory Surcharge
  • FBA Removal and Disposal Order Fee Changes
  • FBA Small and Light Fee Changes

Below, Channel Key breaks down the details of these adjustments and how they will affect FBA sellers.

2022 FBA Fulfillment Fee Changes

On January 18, 2022, FBA fulfillment fee changes will increase in the following three areas:

  • Core FBA fulfillment fees (excluding apparel)
  • FBA fulfillment fees for apparel
  • FBA fulfillment fees for dangerous goods

Core FBA Fulfillment Fee Changes (Excluding Apparel)

The table below shows the adjusted core FBA fulfillment fees that will take effect. The greater of unit weight or dimensional weight will be used to calculate the shipping weight for all large standard-size units, excluding apparel.

FBA Fulfillment Fees Changes for Apparel

Amazon will implement the following fee changes for apparel items in the Clothing & Accessories category:

Fulfillment Fee Changes for Dangerous Goods

FBA has separate fulfillment fees for dangerous goods (also known as hazardous materials or hazmat) that require special handling and storage. The following fulfillment fee adjustments for items sold through the FBA Dangerous Goods program are scheduled to take effect:

Changes to Calculating Shipping Weight

Shipping weight is determined by the unit weight or dimensional weight, depending on the size tier and which is greater. Dimensional weight is equal to the unit volume (length x width x height) divided by 139. The dimensional weight for oversize items assumes a minimum width and height of 2 inches.

Starting January 18, 2022, for core FBA and dangerous goods, Amazon will use dimensional weight when it is greater than unit weight for all large standard-size units and all small oversize, medium oversize, and large oversize units. Small standard-size units will use unit weight.

For apparel, for all small standard-size and large standard-size units weighing more than 0.75 lb. and all small oversize, medium oversize, and large oversize units, Amazon uses dimensional weight when it is greater than the unit weight. Small standard-size units use unit weight.

2022 Amazon Storage Fees and Aged Inventory Surcharges

Starting February 1, 2022, off-peak monthly inventory storage fees (January-September) will increase by $0.08 per cubic foot for standard-size products and $0.05 per cubic foot for oversize products. This change will first be reflected in March 2022 charges for storage that occurs in February 2022.

FBA Aged Inventory Surcharge

Starting May 15, 2022, Amazon will introduce an aged inventory surcharge for units that have been stored in fulfillment centers for 271 to 365 days. Amazon will continue to charge an aged inventory surcharge (previously known as the long-term storage fee) for units that are stored for more than 365 days.

2022 FBA Removal and Disposal Order Fee changes

FBA removal and disposal fees are calculated when an order is placed. These fees are charged at that rate when the shipments leave Amazon fulfillment centers. As a result, if a request is placed before January 18, 2022, but the inventory is removed or disposed of on or after that date, the new FBA fees will not apply. The adjusted removal and disposal order fees shown below take effect on January 18, 2022.

2022 FBA Small and Light Fee Changes

Amazon will implement the following changes to the FBA Small and Light program:

  • The weight limit for FBA Small and Light will increase from 12 oz to 3 lb.
  • Amazon will use the greater of unit weight or dimensional weight to determine the shipping weight for all large standard-size units. Small standard-size units will use the unit weight.
  • Unless otherwise specified, Amazon will continue to charge all other fees (examples include storage fees, removal, and disposal fees) as core FBA.
